Router Issue
There are a couple of ways to address this:
1. Port Triggering - This tells the router to open a port at a specific time when accessed (Port specific). Security Issues - None really it's only temporary.
2. Port Fowarding - Which tells the router to open specific ports for communication to a specific location (Port specific). Security Issues - Very little really it only routes it to a specific computer.
3. DMZ (Demiliterized Zone) - This tells the router that all ports are opened and accessible (Port All). Security Issues - Serious because you have NO security of the router at ALL.
Try the first 2 either can work.
Try the 3rd only if desprate.
IF you do use option 3 Please use a software firewall other than windows (Sygate or ZoneAlarm etc.which can be found on Cnet for free), but windows will do if you don't want to use another.
This should apply to all routers.
Note: A software firewall is always a good option with or without a router firewall.

Make sure your router has the latest firmware. Your port forwarding may be working fine but if your Hardware firewall is still blocking the port...... your not forwarding anything. I have the chincy windows firewall turned on with my computer and a router. I can play the game just fine without windows's firewall throwing any red flags.

Gemosha is correct You router has a function called port triggering. If not set the port forwarding will not work. Both have to be enabled to work. Also if you have software firewall installed in use with your router firewall can cause problems.

Same Here!
I got me a belkin f5d7632-4 wireless g router, ive tried portforward.com and tonns of other websites. Im sure there is something im missing. I have no firewall on either pc or router (< crazy noob eh? :P) and still i cannot get past the CONNECTING PART before GW starts up. I added the port numbers into my routers 'virtual servers' section, and tried with the 'application gateway' section; still no luck.... Anybody got the same router? I'd kill for your settings.... cheers.

a simple fix
like posted above, make sure the firmware is updated.
then make sure you have port triggering enabled
now. you can also set your computer for a static ip, and you can port forward to your ip. thats another simple fix.
